UNION, NJ – The New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association selected Union Mayor Michele S. Delisfort as one of this year’s Planning Excellence Awards honorees. Delisfort was presented with the Budd Chavoosian Award for Outstanding Professional Planner.
“I am fortunate to have spearheaded and worked on a variety of planning projects throughout my career and cannot think of a greater honor than to be acknowledged by my peers with this award in Budd Chavooshian’s name,” said Delisfort, a professional city planner, in her speech at the event.
Aside from being Mayor of the Township of Union, Delisfort is also a small business owner of an Urban Planning consultancy firm with over 20 years of professional experience in land use planning, redevelopment planning, and community economic development. She is a licensed Professional Planner and nationally certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners. Delisfort serves as Chairperson of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Redevelopment Planning Committee and is a member of the National American Planning Association Ethics Committee.
The Budd Chavooshian Award for Outstanding Professional Planner honors a professional planner for sustained contributions to the profession through distinguished practice, teaching or writing at the annual New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association Planning Excellence Awards event. Honorees are nominated by his/her peers throughout New Jersey.
Budd Chavoosian was the Chief of the State Planning Bureau beginning in 1956 and was instrumental in making the state the centralized planning agency by working in conjunction with municipal and county administrators throughout the state of New Jersey.
“Budd was uniquely dedicated to local planning in New Jersey; both as a professional and as a citizen,” said Delisfort. “I consider Budd and I kindred spirits because planning is less about what we do as a profession and more about who we are as people at our core.”
“It’s not often one gets acknowledged for doing what one loves,” added Delisfort, “and I truly love my profession in all of its wonderful facets.”
