UNION, NJ – Union Police Explorers had an opportunity last week to get a glimpse into the work of the Union Fire Department.

Fire Chief Scanio, Captain Steitz and Lt. Steitz demonstrated to the police Explorers the functions and proper use of fire extinguishers.  The Explorers learned about different types of fires and the different extinguishers that available.

Sisbarro Towing of Union donated a vehicle for the day and firefighters demonstrated how they extricate passengers from vehicles involved in serious accidents. The Explorers had an opportunity to see firsthand the work it takes to safely remove passengers at accident scenes and the equipment used by the fire department.

Also helping demonstrate firefighting techniques to the Explorers were firefighters Chua, Brophy, Shanahan, Lopes, Zieser, Brodine and Manzo.

The Union Explorers Program participants are high school students interested in law enforcement as a possible career.  Explorers receive training in CPR, traffic control, accident investigations, crime prevention, communications and assist the Township with community events.
