UNION, NJ – Through the great variety of programs offered by the Township of Union’s Recreation Department, there’s lots to do this fall and winter for kids of all ages.

A “Learn to Skate” workshop is being offered in partnership with the Union Sports Arena.

“Partnering with the Union Sports Arena, we are offering Union residents the opportunity to participate in a 6-week program that will build skater confidence on the ice as well as proficiencies on the ice,” said DJ Salvante, Superintendent of Recreation.  “I think this is a terrific opportunity to take advantage of and help support a Township business.”

The secrets to magic will be revealed in the “Introduction to Magic” workshop.  Boys and girls in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades can learn the basics of magic and trickery in a hands-on workshop led by magical entertainer Joe Fisher.

“Joe’s classes will focus on basic magic tricks and presentation techniques,” said Salvante.  “Participants will have a blast learning the secrets of what makes a magic trick work.”

Classes are held Tuesdays from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.  Sessions are held November 1, 15, 22, 29 and December 6 and 13.  The cost of the program is $90.  Stop by the Recreation Department to register in person.  Registration begins October 1.

An “Arts and Crafts for Tots” program is an interactive arts and crafts class for parents and tots.  The class meets once weekly and “creates a great atmosphere of creative collaboration,” said Salvante.  “Many times the social interaction of the kids extends to play time and other activities outside the craft room.  The program is terrific for early childhood development while also bringing together parents and guardians of similarly aged children.”

All tots must be accompanied by a participating adult for the duration of the class.  The one-hour classes meet on Thursdays beginning October 20, at 9:30 a.m.  Classes met at the Union Recreation Department, 1120 Commerce Avenue.  Call the Recreation Department at 908-686-4200.

The “Winter Break ‘Summer’ Camp” program occurs over the winter holidays featuring activities, arts and crafts and special guests.  The program is for boys and girls in grades 3-5.

“This program is to provide and accommodate students who need some activity during winter break while classes are not in session,” said Salvante.  “We hope to offer more ‘school closed’ programs that will be a change of pace for students, but also will keep the routine of working parents in place.”

The program runs from December 27 – 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Union Recreation Department.  The cost is $150.  Contact the Union Recreation Department at 908-686-4200.
