WEST ORANGE, NJ — Assemblyman John McKeon, former West Orange mayor, took to Facebook on Wednesday to announce his wager with Union-based Senator Joseph Cryan regarding who will emerge victorious in Friday’s semifinal match up between West Orange and Union High School in the North 2, Group 5 state tournament.
McKeon, a West Orange High School alumnus along with all three of his daughters, remains among the Mountaineers’ biggest supporters.
“Senator Joe Cryan and I are ordinarily on the same page; but when it comes to high school football, we have locked horns and are putting our money where our mouths (and stomachs) are—entering into a mono-e-mono wager on the upcoming West Orange Mountaineers vs. Union Farmers football game on Friday,” said McKeon. “Joe, I’m looking forward to having dinner on you at Cioffi's of Union after the West Orange Mountaineers soundly defeat the Union HS Farmers. Unfortunately, Joe, you are going to have to wait to try La Primavera Trattoria in West Orange. #WOTownIsBetterThanYoTown.”
Cryan later responded via Twitter, saying, “I’ll be enjoying one of West Orange’s nicest restaurants. You’ll be missing out on some of the best Italian food in New Jersey. Go Farmers!”
On a more serious note, McKeon and Cryan both wished the student athletes well as the cheering squads and marching bands from both teams the best of luck on Friday, and said they congratulate them all regardless of the outcome.
The two teams will battle it out in the semifinals at Union High School (2350 North 3rd Street) this Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. The victor will go on to play the winner of Friday's semifinal matchup between Ridge (No. 2) and Clifton (No. 3) in the North 2, Group 5 finals on Nov. 22.
