UNION, NJ – Occasional dark clouds and threatening rain didn’t keep the crowds from Union’s first 5k Lantern Run and Food Truck Festival on Saturday to benefit Union High School’s Project Graduation.

The day-long event included over a dozen food trucks, serving everything from lobster rolls to empanadas and cheesesteaks to shaved ice, a beer garden, and entertainment all day from a variety of bands.  A ‘Kids Zone’ entertained with a giant Connect4 and Operation games, checkers and other games and activities.

“This event is just one of the great things the Township has organized in the past few months that help bring our community together in one place,” said Mayor Suzette Cavadas.  “These events help our Township and its residents create a bond with a sense of unity that I am truly touched by and it makes us proud to be part of this great Township.”

Runners and walkers, after donning their glow sticks, glow glasses and light sticks, took off through the streets of Union for the first Lantern Run.  Over 150 walkers and runners participated in the 5k.

After the run, a battle of the DJs took place with six DJs competing for a $1,000 grand prize.  Winning the competition was Dj Senseless (Roberta Johnson), who competed alongside Dj Ran, Dj Shy, Sj Renee, Dj Dreskee, and The People’s Addiction.

“This was a lot of fun,” said Union resident Annette Gardner.  “There were so many choices for food.  Everything looked delicious.”

“This event was such a labor of love from all parties involved, the Recreation Department, Police and the Department of Public Works,” said Public Information Officer and event organizer Natalie Pineiro.  “and without Union High School’s dedicated team, we wouldn't have been half as successful.”
