NEWARK, NJ – Township of Union Mayor Manuel Figueiredo had the unique opportunity Wednesday evening to meet and speak with the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo deSousa.

Figueiredo, a Portuguese-American, was among several elected officials invited to a reception at the NJPAC to meet with the Portuguese President and the Portuguese Ambassador to the U.S. Domingos Fezas Vital. 

“The President’s message was that he was not just the President of the people of Portugal, but of all of the Luso-Americans here,” said Figueiredo.  “He was very warm and thanked me for continuing the legacy of the Portuguese culture in America.”

Figueiredo said that President deSousa added, “the spirit of Portugal is spread through all of you.”
