UNION, NJ – At Tuesday night’s township committee meeting, a testimonial resolution was presented to Staff Sgt. Michael Ryan Sanford, who grew up in Union and graduated from Union High School in 2008.  After enlisting in the U.S. Army, he became an M1 Tank crew member.  Sanford was then stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky.  While stationed there, he received the General George Patton Award as an honor graduate.

In 2011, Sanford was deployed to Afghanistan for a year and redeployed there again in 2012, where he served as a platoon sergeant.  In October 2015, he was inducted into the elite and prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club for his leadership ability, genuine care for fellow soldiers and dedication to the corps of the noncommissioned officers.   Sanford is currently serving as a recruiter in his home state of New Jersey.

At the committee meeting Sanford said, “the Army has taken me many different places around the world, but I call Union home and it always will be.”   Committee Anthony Terrezza said, "Michael is a great product of the Township of Union.  Just read his resume and see the outstanding things he has already achieved."
