UNION, NJ - A fatal car accident on the Garden State Parkway North occurred at just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

An elderly woman crashed into the toll booth barriers at lanes 4 and 5 after hitting two other vehicles.  The woman was trapped in the vehicle as it caught fire.  According to Union Fire Battalion Chief Tom Gourlay, Union police officer Michael Cocca arrived first on the scene and pulled the woman from the car shortly before firefighters arrived.

Officer Cocca and State Police officers moved the victim away from the accident scene and began CPR.  She was pronounced dead at Newark Beth Israel hospital.  Union's Emergency Medical Unit transported one other patient to Overlook Hospital with minor injuries.  One other patient refused medical aid.
