UNION, NJ – Two Washington Elementary School students battled it out for first place at Union’s annual 4th of July All-American Soap Box Derby on Wednesday morning on Stuyvesant Avenue.
In a close final heat of the derby, Adan, 8, beat out Fin, 9, both first time derby racers.
“We are proud to offer this great event for the kids of Union”, said Superintendent of Recreation Robert Cowper. “It’s a really exciting event and the kids love it.”
When asked how it felt to win the derby, Adan said, “I just couldn’t believe it.”
“It felt amazing,” said Fin. “It was so exciting and so cool.”
The derby, in its 11th year, had twenty-four racers flying down Stuyvesant Avenue in elimination rounds. About an hour-and-a-half of racing fun saw a couple of crashes, but one was injured.
Before the race, Franklin School student, Jesse, 8, said, “This is my first time. I’m going to pretend I’m in a Mario Karts video game.”
