Every single day, whether I want to be or not, I am reminded how important it is that Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives in November and check Donald Trump. Fortunately, there is a terrific candidate in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District who can beat incumbent Leonard Lance. That candidate is Tom Malinowski.
I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including the last 17 years in Springfield -- and I have never before been this inspired to support a Congressional candidate. I recently spent two hours with Tom at a house party in town. He is the real deal.
When Tom was a young child, he and his mother fled Communist Poland to come to the United States. Raised in Central Jersey, Tom excelled in school and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. After college, he chose to serve his country as a public servant, first on President Clinton's National Security Council. Most recently, he was Assistant Secretary of State in the Obama administration, fighting for human rights, women's rights and standing up to dictators, such as Russia's Vladimir Putin. Even Republicans like Sen. John McCain sing his praises.
Now, he has come back home with the goal of representing NJ-07. Based on Tom's experience, intelligence and policies, he is a candidate who will excite the base, win over moderate Republicans (especially in the western part of the district) and flip the seat from red to blue.
Others seem to agree. Tom has handily won all three of the district's open county conventions, sweeping Hunterdon, Warren and Morris. If Tom wins the Union County vote on Sunday, Leonard Lance will be nervously looking over his shoulder.
After pledging not to accept corporate PAC money -- unlike his main Democratic rival -- Tom has been endorsed by End Citizen's United, a grassroots group dedicated to reforming our campaign finance system. Tom can help clean up Washington.
But most important to me, I know Tom will fight for my values, my family and all the people of NJ-07. He will be a Representative we can all be proud of.
