SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Goldera Surles, one of the state's top bowlers during her career at Union Catholic, was recently awarded a very prestigious scholarship by The National Bowling Association, Inc.
Surles, who will continue her bowling career at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y. this fall, was awarded the first place Owen O. Washington Scholarship, which was announced at the TNBA Awards Banquet at the 79th Annual Convention in Ann Arbor, Detroit.
Surles was chosen for the scholarship based on her dedication to the community and the National Bowling Association Junior Program, and for her excellence in the classroom. Surles, who lives in Union, and the other scholarship recipients will be featured in the September edition of TNBA's Bowler magazine.
This past winter, Surles helped lead Union Catholic to a 10-4 record, its first ever North Jersey, Sec. 2 Group 2 title, a third-place finish at the Union County Championships, a seventh-place at the State Group 2 Championships, and a runner-up finish in the Union County Conference. Surles placed third at the Union County Championships, and rolled games of 194, 200, and 236 for a series of 630 at the sectionals, and she also qualified for the Tournament of the Champions.
