UNION, NJ – Union High School’s nationally acclaimed Performing Arts Company (UHSPAC) will be presenting the Tony Award-winning musical Once on this Island, with music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, beginning March 20.

Inspired by Hans Christen Anderson’s “Little Mermaid” and based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, this touching, Calypso-flavored musical adaptation is a universal tale about the power of love in a world of prejudice.  Set in the French Antilles, the story tells of the peasant girl Ti Moune who falls in love with a wealthy boy that lives on the other side of the island. As Ti Moune explores the harsh realities of the social class system, the Gods bet on which idea is stronger, love or death.  The score features “Why We Tell the Story,” “Waiting for Life,” and Broadway’s fan-favorite “Mama Will Provide.”

Performances will be March 20-22 and 27-29,  in the Union High School Theatre, 2350 North 3rd St. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday performances begin at 2:00 p.m.
