UNION, NJ - A celebration of Juneteenth, the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, will be held on Saturday, June 1, at the Vauxhall Branch Public Library.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is celebrated on June 19 and marks the anniversary of the end of slavery in Texas, the last state in which it survived. The celebration of June 19 was coined "Juneteenth" and began in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. It was on this day that the slaves in Texas learned they were free.
The Vauxhall Community Group's Juneteenth Celebration, will begin at 12:00 p.m. There will be discussion, reflection and light refreshments. The Vauxhall Branch Public Library is located at 123 Hilton Avenue in Vauxhall. For more information, call 908-578-5920.
