UNION, NJ – Shouting messages of congratulations and hope, an electronic billboard along Route 22 east, seen by thousands of motorists a day, is displaying seven messages celebrating the Union High School Class of 2020.

The signs offer hope and encouragement to the graduating class, such as "Pursue all of your dreams with courage" and "You are stronger than you know".  The billboard also congratulates Union High School's Valedictorian, Arthanious Shafik, and Salutatorian, Jane Oyem.  One of the billboards reads, "Unstoppable -- born around 9/11; Unbreakable -- graduating during a pandemic; Undefinable -- Class of 2020".

Union High School math teacher and Senior Class Advisor Cheryl Fiske, along with advisors Megan Kaplan, English teacher, and Tara Scaramuzzi, special education teacher, said they have been meeting with main office staff and district administration at least once a week to find ways to celebrate seniors in a safe and healthy way. “We have called everyone from decorating companies to stadiums to try to give our seniors the best we possibly can,” said Fiske.  “One thing we knew we wanted to do was to let the class of 2020 know publicly how proud we are of them.”

Fiske said Laura Finnerty, main office secretary and Union High School bookkeeper, connected the advisors with Outfront Media to help with a billboard. Union High School administrators, central office administrators, senior class advisors, and Athletic Director Linda Ionta all contributed messages, and Outfront Media worked on the design.

The billboards will be up for the month of June on Route 22 East.
