UNION, NJ - A car caravan is planned for Thursday, June 18, from Jeanette Avenue, up Morris Avenue, ending at Kean University organized by Kean Federation of Teachers protesting the university's cut, suspension, or reorganization of several academic programs and the layoff or furlough of faculty and staff.
The Kean Federation of Teachers said the cuts are primarily in the arts. “Kean educates mostly minority students,” said KFT President James Castiglione. “By cutting courses in the arts, Kean is saying its students don’t deserve or need these classes. This is unacceptable and socially irresponsible.”
The slow procession of cars will begin with a student-alumni-faculty rally of speakers at 3:30 p.m. at the Union municipal lot at 1023 Jeanette Avenue. The caravan will begin at 4:20, terminating in several campus loops from the Morris Avenue entrance, exiting through Green Lane and back.
