UNION, NJ – A fundraiser coordinated by the Union Athletic Department raised over $1,300 for the Union Food Pantry earlier this month.

Union Athletic Director Linda Ionta said she had just finished reading an article about the Union Food Pantry when a vendor asked her if she was interested in initiating a fundraiser.  “I thought the community has really come out and supported us this year.  What better way for Union Athletics to give back than raise money for the food bank.”

Ionta said she contacted Kristin Nunes, a Jefferson School teacher who handles the district’s school athletic social media, and “she ran with it”.  Nunes promoted the fundraiser through Instagram, Facebook, and twitter, and the district sent out a mass email to all staff.  The fundraiser ran from May 5 to May 18.

The final total raised donated to the Food Pantry was $1,305.00

“So many Union families will be helped by this very generous donation,” said Township of Union Clerk Eileen Birch, who runs the Food Pantry.  “We will be able to keep the pantry stocked, so we can serve those in need.”

“I’d like to thank all the teachers and those in the community who bought the t-shirts,” said Ionta. "We really appreciate their support."

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in and organized the fundraiser,” added Birch.  “We are proud to have them in our community.”

“We are grateful that the community has come together in supporting our fundraising efforts for the food pantry,” said Nunes.
