UNION, NJ - Battle Hill School students and parents pitched in Tuesday night to make sandwiches for the homeless and those in need.
Alex Rankin and Stacey Callahan from “Be the Change” helped coordinate the sandwich-making effort. “Be the Change” is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Norma Bowe, a professor at Kean University. Rankin said the group meets every week to make sandwiches and then distribute them out to those in need at Newark Penn Station.
Callahan said the individuals who receive the sandwiches look forward to them each week. “They know us and we know them,” she said. “If they need more than a sandwich, we’ll work with them to get them the help they need.”
“The kids really enjoyed this event,” said Ingrid Soares, School Counselor. “They even decorated the bags with pictures and kind words. We made over 200 sandwiches. The students and their families did an amazing job.”
