UNION, NJ – Longtime Union teacher and coach Nicholas F. Nugent, 86, passed away on Friday, Feb. 9.

Nugent, of Clark, taught for the Union Board of Education at Union High School and Washington Grammar School. He also taught Driver Education at the high school, as well as coaching golf and bowling, during which time his teams won two state championships. 

Nugent was born in Bayonne to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Maitner) Nugent. He received his BA in Education from the University of Miami. He was Captain of Miami’s Baseball Team, which was coached by Hall of Famer, Jimmy Foxx. He also played basketball there. He was an avid swimmer and golfer. He lived in Roselle for many years, prior to moving to Clark 10 years ago.

In Roselle, Nick was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3946 and member of the American Legion Post 229. He was also a member of the Union Elks. He was a longtime Volunteer at the Lyons VA Hospital. He was renowned for the countless thousands of postcards he wrote, sending get well wishes to family and friends.

Nick is survived by his wife of 57 years Josephine (Ward) Nugent; his devoted children, Dennis Nugent, Jack Nugent and his wife Karla and Captain Thomas Nugent of the Roselle Police Dept. and his cherished grandchildren, Gregory, Marissa and Erica Nugent. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Theresa Dente Nugent and his sister, Marilyn Nugent Duffy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral from the Walter Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Rd., Clark, on Wednesday, February 14 at 10:00 am, thence to the Church of St. Joseph the Carpenter, Roselle, where a Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, from 4 - 8 pm.
