PLAINFIELD, NJ -- Adoption of the puppies and kittens that were taken from the Scotch Plains puppy mill is temporarily on hold for two weeks, according to the Plainfield Area Humane Society's director Elijah Brice-Middleton.
"There's a hold on them (adoptions of the animals confiscated from the house on Laurie Court and Terrill Road in Scotch Plains) for now," Brice-Middleton told TAPintoSPF.
Although the director could not go into the reasoning, he could confirm that 42 animals from Scotch Plains are currently at the shelter and that the hold was not due to health reasons. Scotch Plains police chief Ted Conley said that he had not been informed by the rescue agency that the animals were not yet available for fostering or adoption.
Since the story broke, the Plainfield Area Humane Society has experienced a higher than normal weekday level of activity.
"We don't know exactly when they will be available, but when they are, we will post it on our Facebook page," said Brice-Middleton, who estimated that it might be two weeks before the animals could be adopted.
The director did say that if people want to do something help, they can contribute money to the organization. The Plainfield Area Humane Society's income comes from donations, adoption fees, fund-raisers, bequests, grants, corporate gifts and animal control service contracts. Seventy percent of the rescue agency's income comes from donations, and although the rescue agency has a published Wish List, it is in need of money to help feed 42 new (temporary) residents and the other animals seeking human families.
Adoption fees are $150 for all cats and kittens, and $250 for all dogs and puppies. All pets are vetted, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped before leaving for their "forever homes."
