UNION, NJ - Responding to a call Wednesday morning at 11:00, Union firefighters found a pile of garbage in flames in a parking lot on Chestnut Street.

According to Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio, the driver of the garbage truck dumped the burning garbage in the parking lot of the Wine Depot at 457 Chestnut Street.  As the fire was being extinguished, embers were flying near the homes on the block behind the parking lot.  Firefighters responded to Bailey Avenue and Ellen Street to check for any fire into the neighboring homes, but none was found, said Scanio.

Union Department of Public Works employees arrived with a backhoe to help firefighters pull apart the large pile of burning debris for final extinguishment.  There were no injuries reported.
