UNION, NJ – The Union Police Department will be rolling out its first drone unit, joining a growing number of agencies enhancing their search and rescue capabilities through the use of drones.

According to Union police, drones have been used to help locate lost children and seniors who have wandered from their homes by covering large areas in a short period of time, especially at night. The drones will also enhance the department’s capabilities to more effectively search for suspects when necessary.

Drones have been found useful at crime scenes and accident investigation sites.  A drone can survey a crime scene faster and more accurately than a human on the ground.   Union police will also have the ability to survey an active fire or crime scene from an angle that would have been impossible prior to obtaining the drone.

“The Union Police Department feels the addition of the drone program will further enhance our capability to serve and protect our community,” said a Union police spokesperson.
