UNION, NJ - Route 78 westbound has been closed in the Union area due to a multi vehicle accident Sunday afternoon.

According to Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio, there were multiple injuries and those injuried were transported to Morristown Hospital.  No other details on the injured are available. 

Scanio said the accident involved two tractor trailers and a taxi and appears to have occurred on Route 78 at the Vauxhall bridge overpass.  The taxi was engulfed in flames.  Scanio said, while the cause of the crash has yet to be determined, one tractor trailer struck the Vauxhall bridge.  He said the damage does not appear severe, but members from the New Jersey Department of Transportation are en route to survey the damage.  Hazmat workers are on the scene.

Scanio said it is anticipated that one local lane will be open by 4:15 p.m.
