UNION, NJ – Four Union firefighters were promoted from lieutenant to Captain and took the oath office Monday, outside behind Town Hall before family and friends.

The new Union Fire Department Captains are:

  • Captain Eric Stroming
  • Captain Mike Davitt
  • Captain Chris Steitz
  • Captain Robert Falzarano

“These promotions will fill vacancies created by retirements,” said Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio.  “I want to congratulate all my members and the recent Union Police Department promotions. I also need to thank our administration, Mayor Delisfort, my commissioner Manny Figuriedo and the rest of the Township Committee for continuing to put the safety of our businesses and citizens first. These promotions allow us to continue to operate and safe and efficient staffing levels.”

Captain Eric Stroming was appointed to the Township of Union Fire Department on September 25, 2000 and promoted to Lieutenant in January 2017.   Stroming has 25 years of service in the Reserves. He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, starting in the US Navy Reserve prior to a inter - service transfer to the Coast Guard Reserve, where he currently serves as a COMMANDAR working out of Sector New York, as the Reserve Chief of Enforcement.

Stroming has received multiple awards within the Coast Guard and the Navy, including a Coast Guard Commendation Medal, a Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and 3 Navy Achievement Medals.

Stroming is married to wife Jessica and has three children Neil and twins Eric and Hailey.

Captain Christopher Steitz was appointed to the Union Fire Department on July 1, 2004 and promoted to Lieutenant on September 1, 2015.

During his 16-year career, Steitz has received four Meritorious Awards for meritorious service, outstanding effort and good judgment, one of which he received for his rescue of a woman from a submerged vehicle during Hurricane Irene.  

Steitz also earned a two Unit Awards and a Group Award for actions bringing credit to the fire service in 2014.  He received outside recognition as Firefighter of the Year from the Knights of Columbus in 2013 and First Responder Award from the Islamic Center in 2014.

Steitz is a member of the NJ Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team, the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force and the Union Fire Department Special Ops Team.

Steitz is married to wife Brittany, and has three children Lucas, Camryn and Taylor.

Captain Michael Davitt was appointed to the Township of Union Fire Department on August 29, 2011 and promoted to Lieutenant in January 2018.  Prior to joining the Fire Department, Davitt worked for the Union Police Department and was awarded 2011 Dispatcher of the Year.

Davitt comes from a family of firefighters.  His father, James Davitt, served on the Union Fire Department for 25 years before retiring as Deputy Fire Chief, and two brothers, Chris and Billy, are also both firefighters, with Union and Maplewood, respectively.

Davitt holds an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Union County College.  He is married to wife Tiffany and has three daughters, Leah, Kylie & Julia.

Captain Robert Falzarano was appointed to the Township of Union Fire Department on August 1, 1996 and promoted to Lieutenant in July 2017.  During his career, Falzarano received multiple awards including a Group Award in 2005, Commendation Medal in 2006, and a Meritorious Award for a CPR/defibrillator save of a cardiac arrest victim while off-duty in 2011, he also received the New Jersey State FMBA Life Saving Award for the same incident.

In conjunction with his firefighting duties, Falzarano has also served on the Firemen’s Relief Association as a Trustee for many years. In addition, he has held the positions of Shop Steward, Vice President and President of Union Local 46.  He is currently President of Union Local No. 246.

Prior to joining the Union Fire Department, Falzarano entered the United States Army Reserves in March 1989 and attained the rank of Specialist E-4 before being honorably discharged in January 1998.  He received numerous awards while serving in the Army Reserves including the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon w/Number 1, Army Lapel Button, the Sharpshooter Marksmanship Rifle Badge and was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990-1991.

Falzarano is married to wife Rosanna and has two children James and Vanessa.
