UNION, NJ – An intense vehicle fire on the side of the Garden State Parkway saw Union firefighters respond to the scene at about 10:30 Tuesday night.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully involved pickup truck on the northbound side of the Parkway at Exit 140. Union Battalion Chief Henry Sisbarro said the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Sisbarro said the State Police assisted at the scene for traffic control. “The dangers of distracted passing motorists at a roadway incidents are the biggest risk to responder health and safety,” added Sisbarro.
The New Jersey Move Over Law requires drivers approaching a stationary emergency vehicle shall, where possible, make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the emergency vehicle(s). If a lane change is impossible, passising vehicles should reduce speed to a “reasonable and proper speed for the existing road and traffic conditions…and be prepared to stop.”
