UNION, NJ – Union firefighters have had a busy few days responding to over 400 storm-related incidents and a major tractor trailer accident on Route 78 Thursday morning.

Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio said Union firefighters were dispatched to Route 78 West just prior to the Vauxhall Road bridge for an accident involving two tractor trailers at about 7:00 Thursday morning.

According to Scanio, when firefighters arrived, they found one of the drivers entrapped behind the steering wheel and dashboard. Firefighters worked for 20 minutes to extricate the driver, who was then transported to University Hospital.  His condition is unknown at this time, Scanio said.

Scanio said most of the fire department’s storm-related responses were for downed wires, mostly communication, cable and phone lines.  He said firefighters responded to a few motor vehicle accidents and fire alarms due to power outages.
