UNION, NJ – Union firefighters responded to a basement fire on Pine Avenue Saturday night at about 6:00.

The home-owners were outside the home when firefighters arrived, said Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio.  They reported a fire in the basement after hearing an explosion and fire alarms.

Firefighters forced entry to the rear door of the home and extinguished the fire from there and from a rear exterior window.  Firefighters searched all floors and secured electric and gas lines.  The fire was placed under control within about 20 minutes.

Scanio said upon initial investigation the fire did not appear suspicious.  The Red Cross was notified to assist with relocating the first floor tenants.  No injuries were reported.
