UNION, NJ – Union firefighters responded to a garage fire late Sunday night.

Firefighters arrived at the two-car detached garage at 73 Maple Avenue in Vauxhall at about 10:00 p.m. to find heavy smoke throughout the block.  According to Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio, the garage was fully engulfed in flames and hose lines were initially stretched to protect the surrounding homes.

The  roof structure and walls collapsed, said Scanio, and the fire melted the rear siding of two nearby homes. There was no fire inside the home.

No civilians or firefighters were injured, and the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.  Scanio said the fire is currently under investigation.
