UNION, NJ – A special reunion between three Union police officers and the baby they delivered in June took place last week at the baby’s Union County home.
Robert Joseph Cunningham (Bobby) was born May 20 at 12:43 a.m., delivered by Union police officers Debbie Rodriguez, Owen Curry and John McTernan.
According to Bobby’s mother, Devon, she and her husband Sean were on their way to Saint Barnabas Hospital when Devon asked Sean to pull over and call 911 because she didn’t think they’d make it to the hospital. Sean pulled into the Sunoco parking lot on Route 22. Shortly after, officers McTernan and Curry arrived. “They were calm and very comforting as I was clearly in active labor,” said Devon. When Officer Rodriguez arrived, the baby was delivered safely.
Bobby joined his older sister, Kayleigh, 2. Devon said she comes from a police family. Her late father, Robert Joseph McGillis, was a Jersey City K9 officer. Her mom, Joanne, is a retired Jersey City detective. Her brother is a current police officer in Bayonne.
“We are beyond thankful for Officer Debbie, Officer John and Officer Owen,” said Devon. “Without them, who knows what could have happened. How do you repay someone for making sure that your baby came safely in to this world?”
Devon said although she only remembers bits and pieces of that night, she’ll always remember knowing that she was in good hands. “Everyone remained calm and was truly professional.” She added that being able to “’officially’ meet these amazing officers was very special. They will always hold a special place in our hearts.”
