UNION, NJ - Union residents and future firefighters came out on Saturday for the Fire Department’s first Open House.

“We were happy to plan this event so that we can interact with the citizens we serve in a more relaxed atmosphere,” said Union Fire Chief Mike Scanio, “as opposed to only seeing them on what could be the worst day of their life.”  Scanio said off-duty firefighters donated their time to come and participate with residents with demonstrations, discussions, and even a dunk tank.

The event also included firehouse tours, seminars on basic first aid and CPR, an obstacle course for kids, extrication demonstrations, games, free hot dogs and snacks.

“It’s wonderful what Chief Scanio has initiated here today,” said Township Committeeman Manuel Figueiredo, “bringing residents together to get a further insight into what the department does, the equipment they have and what they do on a daily basis.”
