UNION, NJ - After several months of rigorous training and education, from the classroom to the training grounds, Union’s ten new fire fighters were recognized at a ceremony Thursday, June 28.
“Sixteen weeks ago you started your career with one of the most well respected fire departments in the state and the country,” said Union Fire Chief Michael Scanio. “The training you received was unrivaled,.”

- Dan Norris
- Patrick J. Scanlon
Training instructor Lieutenant Kenny DeHart said, “From our very first meeting, I had a feeling that great things were going to come from these guys, and I was right.” Throughout training, DeHart said, “these men were organized, disciplined, pleasant and ready to begin another day. I am extremely proud of each recruit for how they carried themselves, prepared and interacted with other members and the dedication that they have established for the Union Fire Department. They are truly a great group of guys.”
“You’ve taken a huge step today,” said State Senator Joseph Cryan. “The changes that have occurred during the last sixteen weeks are changes that will continue. It's important that you realize that you continue to grow as part of your responsibility. Your dedication and professionalism will make a difference to the people you serve.”
"Congratulations to the 'Fabulous 10'," said Township Committeeman Manuel Figueiredo. "Know that you have joined a phenomenal family. You've now added the entire Union Fire Department into your family."
"I travel the state and I see a lot of fire departments," said Union fireman and state FMBA President Ed Donnelly. "This is a by-product of what happens when the administration, the union and township officials work together. Folks in Union could not be safer. You guys are joining a department that is second to none."
