UNION, NJ – The Union Soccer Club U17 Boys known as the “Spartans” recently claimed the title of the US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup Eastern Regional Champions

The Spartans went undefeated in the five-day tournament, hosted in Dunbar, West Virginia. The win advanced them to the Nationals hosted in Murfreesboro, Tennessee during the week of July 10-14.

“The boys battled every day and left every drop of sweat on the field in the Tennessee heat and humidity, with temperatures in the 90’s every morning,” said coach Joseph McDonough.  The Spartans faced teams from throughout the country.   The Spartans finished fourth.

McDonough said the Spartans were complimented by the high level officials on the field and tournament staff for their play as well as their show of discipline and professionalism to the game.  “Thanks to Coach Herberth and Coach Libby for their support and guidance,” added McDonough.  “They as a team helped put the Union Soccer Club on the map.”

Goalie Stephen Torres and Defender Michael McDonough were each presented with a “The Best Eleven” award at the tournament.
