Here's How Some Veterans Can Participate in New Free Parking Meter Program

UNION COUNTY, NJ — The County Clerk's office can help disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients in the county obtain documents to participate in a new statewide program that exempts them from paying at parking meters.

County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi said veterans' identification cards and copies of DD-214 honorable discharge forms can be obtained for free at her office, located in the Union County Courthouse at 2 Broad St. in Elizabeth.

“The free ID cards and DD-214 copies are intended to help veterans gain access to discounts and important benefits as quickly and conveniently as possible,” explained Rajoppi said in a statement. “We also offer assistance with the peddler license application process for veterans who are starting their own businesses in the vending field.”

Veterans need such documents to obtain the vehicle placard from the Motor Vehicles Commission, which will exempt them from paying parking fees at municipal meters. The placard may only be used in a vehicle that is owned by the disabled veteran or Purple Heart recipient, and only when the veteran is a driver or passenger in the vehicle.

Visit the MVC's website or call 609-292-6500 to learn more about applying for the program, which was announced Aug. 3 at VFW Post 1333 in Asbury Park.

The County Clerk also provides a Veterans Discount Directory of businesses in the county and helps veterans apply for peddler licenses for free. For more information about these services or to list a business in the County Clerk’s Veterans Discount Directory, visit the County Clerk's website or call 908-527-4787.

More information about veteran’s services and resources in the county is available through the Union County HERO initiative.
