UNION, NJ - Shylehn Ebuenga-Smith has been chosen Union High School’s December Female Athlete of the Month, sponsored by Service Professionals.

Ebuenga-Smith, a junior, has a personal record in Winter Track and Field in the 55m race and is lead-off runner for 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams.

What’s your favorite part of being a high school athlete?

My favorite part of being a high school athlete is being able to have the opportunity of competing against people my age, and also the experiences.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Usain Bolt because he represents Jamaica and he is very inspiring.

What are the most important attributes of being a leader?

To me being a leader means to set an example of how things should be, and to help people become better. This means you have to be there for your team to help them improve.

What is your greatest high school accomplishment so far?

My greatest high school accomplishment so far was being one of the first freshman to go to Penn Relays.

Do you play any other sports? What’s your favorite?

I also play volleyball. I can’t decide on a favorite sport because I enjoy them both equally.

What’s your favorite subject? Why?

My favorite subject is Science because I find it really interesting to learn.

If you could spend the day with anyone in the world alive or dead, who would it be?

I would want to spend it with BTS because they showed me that if you start from the bottom, with hard work you can build your success up and succeed in anything.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a physical trainer.

What’s your favorite part of being a high school athlete?

My favorite part of being a high school athlete are the acknowledgments and compliments I get. Also, watching myself improve.

What was the most difficult thing for you to overcome as a student-athlete?

Me trying to find time to keep up a grade in a subject I’m not good at while playing a sport.

What would your words of wisdom be to future UHS athletes?

There will always be people who are going to be better than you, but it’s up to you to use them to better yourself. One day the hard work will pay off.

Who inspires you?

My parents inspire me the most.

What are your plans after high school?

After high school, I plan on going to university. I don’t have a specific one I want to go to though.
