The Cedar Grove 12u Panthers traveled to Wayne in the cold this past Wednesday night. Wayne PAL came out hard swinging and also pitching against the Panthers. Under the lights and going into the top of the fourth inning, the Panthers were already down 5-0, but the midway score didn’t discourage the boys. They were determined to rally back after motivating speeches by coaches Mike Kuilan and Ronnie Sheridan.
Dom Reynolds hit a nice single at the top of the fourth to start up the hitting for the Panthers. Kurt Kurtheyer, Alex Reese, Marco Contorno, Matt Norman, Jackson Morrice, Ronnie Sheridan, Christian Kaulback, and Matthew “Chewy” Kuilan all turned it up on offense, moving players around the bases to help the Panthers bounce back, putting five runs onto the scoreboard.
Left fielder Ben Sellers had an unbelievable dive and rolling catch deep in the outfield, which amazed the fans and stopped what would have been an easy double for Wayne. Shortstop Matthew Tafuri played a solid game, not letting anything get past him.
Anthony Johnson threw only 37 pitches in the last 3 innings, practically shutting down Wayne. But despite the late Panthers rally, it just wasn’t enough to top Wayne. The final score was Cedar Grove Panthers 5, Wayne PAL 6.
“It was a great effort from the boys, they really battled back” said coach Kevin Norman. “We are having a great time, that’s the most important thing.” After a long spring break ahead, the Panthers will be ready to re-face the Denville Dragons at home on April 28th.
