CEDAR GROVE, NJ - For four years, senior Chloe Weinstein has hit the court for the Cedar Grove High School girls basketball team. A two-year captain, Weinstein has been a leader both on and off the court. Weinstein is the Allstate Cedar Grove Athlete of the Week. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Shelby Mobley, Allstate Insurance Agent, 471 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove.
“Chloe is invaluable to our team. She leads our team in assists and is our third leading scorer and rebounder. Her rebounding is the amazing piece because they are "in the lane" rebounds and that reflects the way she plays the game, with all-out effort,” said Head Coach Bill Scanlon. “Our program is very fortunate to have had such a high-character individual be a part of it for the past four years, the last two as a team captain.”
While sad to see her high school basketball career come to an end, Weinstein is happy to be ending on a high note. She celebrated her Senior Night on Tuesday with a big win over Orange and with a current record of 15-6, the team is poised to vie for the conference title.
“Senior night was a little sad, but still exciting. It's great that the season is still going on and the game was a lot of fun. Everyone got a chance to play,” Weinstein said.
Weinstein feels the strength of the offense is driving the team’s success this season along with a strong team chemistry.
“Everyone on the team gets along. When we’re on the court we’re all on the same page. We pick each other up and support each other,” Weinstein said. “I think our offense in general is our strength. Teams can play us zone or man, and we can still get to the basket and score.”
With 21 games played, Weinstein cited two matchups against Caldwell as her favorite of the season so far.
“Both games against Caldwell were great. I can’t really pick one over the other. There was our home opener, and then we played them for their fundraiser. Both games were intense -- I think both games were the best we played all season. They were both just really fun,” Weinstein said.
Looking ahead, the Panthers have the state tournament coming up as well as the annual Hoops for Hope game against Verona which will take place the CGHS gym on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“As of tomorrow we can possibly win the conference title which is great, but I really want to win Hoops for Hope because we’ve never done that in the four years I’ve been playing,” Weinstein said. “And it’s all for a good cause.”
