NEWARK, NJ — An award-winning craft ramen and Japanese Izakaya restaurant group will open later this year in Newark's historic Hahne & Co. building on Halsey Street.

L+M Development Partners, Prudential Financial and Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group have announced Ani Ramen House has signed a 10-year lease for an estimated 8,700 square feet on the first floor of the Hahne & Co. building in downtown Newark.

"Having grew up in Bloomfield, the town right next to Newark, I am excited not only to open an Ani Ramen House restaurant in the flourishing Newark community but to also make Ani Ramen’s new home base in the historic Hahne’s building," said Luck Sarabhayavanija, Ani Ramen House’s founding partner.

The new space – Ani’s largest yet – will include a restaurant, the company’s first commissary kitchen and corporate offices. Pierson Commercial Real Estate represented the landlord and tenant in the deal.

Ani Ramen House, launched in 2014 by Luck Sarabhayavanija, builds on the Japanese tradition of quality ramen. The restaurant group has become well-known in the region for its house-made pork, chicken and vegetarian ramen broths using artisan Sun Noodles, as well as their bao buns, gyoza and other izakaya small plates.

The Hahne & Co. space will be Ani’s sixth location and serve as the company’s headquarters, where chefs will prepare food for the other Ani outposts in Montclair, Jersey City, Summit and Maplewood.

The new location was designed by Inglese Architecture & Engineering. The space will include a 2,500 square foot restaurant, 5,000 square foot commissary kitchen, and 1,200 square feet of offices.

Ani Ramen House is the latest business to move into the historic Hahne & Co. building, which L+M, Prudential and Goldman Sachs UIG reopened in 2017 after an extensive overhaul. The former department store, which sat abandoned for nearly 30 years, was transformed into a mixed-use complex featuring residences, an arts and cultural center operated by Rutgers University-Newark, Newark’s first Whole Foods Market, a Marcus Samuelsson restaurant, Marcus B&P and an outpost of New Orleans-based coworking company Launch Pad (TAPinto Newark's office is located in Launch Pad). 

A Petco store, however, closed its doors several months ago on the first floor of the Hahne & Co. building.
