VERONA, NJ - Verona school district reported a suspected case of bed bugs at Laning Avenue School to parents on Friday. This comes after bed bugs were found at Verona High School, which was resolved by a pest management company.
A letter from school principal Howard Freund stated: "In an effort to be proactive and transparent, we would like to inform you of a likely case of bed bugs at Laning Avenue School. The issue of bed bugs in a school can be emotional and generate concern. The presence of bed bugs in a building does not mean the place is unclean, as bed bugs can be found in any building. Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but cause reasonable distress and health concerns for many people."
Freund said that the school will follow Board of Education protocols to remediate the situation at Laning Avenue School. Verona Public Schools has contracted the services of a specialized trained dog through a licensed pest management professional company to conduct an inspection of Laning Avenue School. The dogs are capable of detecing bed bugs throughout the entire building, including behind walls. The district will also follow through with recommended vacuuming procedures and treat all necessary classrooms and areas with a non-toxic cleaner.
