Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Maplewood Early Saturday Morning

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - A bicyclist who was struck by a motor vehicle early Saturday morning died as a result of his injuries, according to a press release from the Maplewood Police Department.

The man, age 29, was biking in the area of 1600 Springfield Ave. when he was struck by a motor vehicle at about 2:30 a.m., according to police, who arrived with EMS at the scene minutes after the accident occurred and attempted to render first aid. 

"Unfortunately the victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene," stated Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul in the press release about the incident.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene.

The vehicle involved was impounded for further examination by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, and an autopsy will be completed by the Regional Medical Examiners Office, according to police.

The incident is currently an active investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, which is standard procedure in serious or fatal accidents, stated police.
