CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove parents packed Tuesday's Cedar Grove's Board of Education meeting to express their support for long time girls' basketball coach Bill Scanlon. At the same time the Board announced the immediate resignation of Board Vice President Frank Mandala who was not present at the meeting.
Scanlon's reappointment as head girl's basketball coach was on the action agenda for the evening. Board President Christine Dye stated that Scanlon received a Rice Notice that his reappointment was up for discussion. Per the Rice Notice, Scanlon had the choice of having the discussion in public or executive session. According to Dye, Mr. Scanlon chose to have a public discussion.
Many parents and players, past and present, spoke on the behalf of Coach Scanlon and encouraged the Board to reappoint him. Parents John and Lina Green praised Coach Scanlon. Their daughter Jessie, who currently plays for Scanlon, told them about the meeting and was worried that he was not going to be reappointed. The Board voted to approve Coach Scanlon as Head Coach with affirmative votes from Nicole DiChiara, David Schoner and Dye. Peter Prvulovic abstained.
Per New Jersey state law, a Rice notice is required "any time a Board of Education or municipality has placed on its agenda any matters “involving the employment, appointment, termination of employment, terms and conditions of employment, evaluation of the performance of, promotion, or disciplining of any specific prospective public officer or employee or current public officer or employee employed or appointed by the public body[.]”
