Boys Basketball: Verona Falls to University 59-47

EAST ORANGE, NJ – Verona battled hard Thursday night, but could not overcome University in the NJSIAA Group 1 Semifinals at the East Orange Campus.  Though the Hillbillies kept pace in the first half, University’s strong performance in the second gave them the 59-47 win.

The first quarter ended at a 14-14 tie.  University outscored Verona 19-12 in  the second to give them a 33-26 advantage.  Verona cut the lead to 35-32 when Jack Farrell sunk a three-pointer, but University went on to score 10 consecutive points and ended the third up by 12.  The Hillbillies actually outscored University 15-14 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to clinch the win.

Travis Jocelyn posted 18 points and seven rebounds for Verona, while Farrell tacked on nine points and Zack Zaccone added six points and grabbed nine rebounds.

University’s Zamir Wright scored 17 points and had three rebounds.  Marad Banks added 13 points and Tariq McKenith had 12 points in the win.

Verona finished the season with a 22-8 record and the North 1 Group 1 sectional title.
