ROSELLE, NJ - Verona/Glen Ridge skated through the preliminary round of the McInnis Cup tourney, defeating Westfield 2-1 at on Sunday, but their hopes of defending last year's title were stolen by Summit who defeated them 5-0 on Tuesday night.
The Westfield game was scoreless after two periods. Sean DeCandia found the back of the net first for Verona/Glen Ridge in the first minute of the final period. Westfield's Matthew Rittendale tied the game with help from Brendan Glenn on a power play with 12 minutes left in the game. However, Jarrod Keating stole the lead back form the Hillbillies with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Colin Gilmore made 26 saves in net for Verona.
Gilmore battled in the net for the Hillbillies on Tuesday, delivery 39 saves but VGR was unable to score against top-seeded Summit.
