Boys Lacrosse: Verona Vanquishes Lakeland to Advance in State Tourney

WANAQUE, NJ – Carter Kenny’s fifth goal of the game was clutch for Verona.  With just 2:30 left in overtime Kenny’s goal pushed No. 9 Verona passed No. 8 Lakeland, to win the first round of the NJSIAA North 1, Group 1 Tournament in Wanaque on Wednesday.

The Hillbillies outscored the Lancers in the first half ending with a 5-2 advantage, but Lakeland was not to be counted out and pushed back in the third quarter scoring six goals to Verona’s two.  With Lakeland in the lead they entered the final quarter ending in a 9-9 tie. 

Both teams battled in overtime, but Kenny found the back of the net first.  Doug Spardel had three goals and three assists in the win.  Eric Stoloff and Jack Farrell each tacked on a goal and an assist for Verona.

Michael Wilson had a hat trick for the Lancers.  Christopher Costiglia scored twice and Luke Broderick had three assists for Lakeland. 

In goal for Verona, Andrew Gagliostro had 15 saves, while Anthony Scafuro had 10 saves for Lakeland.

Verona will next battle No. 1 Mountain Lakes on Saturday at 11 a.m.
