CEDAR GROVE, NJ – The 10th Annual Battle of the Badges will be held on Oct. 15 at Community Park in Cedar Grove from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. featuring the police and fire departments from Cedar Grove, Verona and West Caldwell, and the police departments of North Caldwell and Little Falls.

This year all proceeds will help to purchase a service dog for Cedar Grove resident Matthew Ribaudo.  Ribaudo is the son of retired Cedar Grove Police Officer Joseph Ribaudo and lives with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  He was recently approved for a service dog through “Loyalty Service Dogs” and all monies raised from the tournament will go to purchasing the dog, as well as the other expenses that will be incurred, such as training, traveling to meet the dog and eventually transporting the dog to his home.

No tickets are necessary to attend the event, but donations are appreciated and can be made out to Joseph Ribaudo or to cash.  Hamburgers, hot dogs and desserts will be offered as well as $10 mugs with free root beer refills.

The Battle of the Badges Charity Softball Classic was started in 2007 by Lt. Erik Hansson and Det. Michael Tower and Jose Rodriguez with the Cedar Grove Police and Fire Departments.  For the past five years, the event has been opened up to other towns.

The Cedar Grove Fire Department won last year’s tournament, defeating the North Caldwell Police Department 9-2.
