CEDAR GROVE, NJ-  Business Teacher, Joseph Cardinale, has put his Sport Management class into the real world with their latest event. The class is organizing and running the Annual Orange Invitational Volleyball Tournament, which is being held on March 22 at the Cedar Grove High School gym at 7 p.m.  The tournament will raise funds for Verona’s Team Zoey, a foundation that raises money for progeria research and is named after Verona second-grader Zoey Penny.

The competitive-natured students have been eager to publicize the teams entering the competition. Below is the class’s overall preview of the potential and upcoming talent of some of the competitors.

The Favorite: FACULTY - The Faculty are the reigning champions of the Annual Orange Invitational. They coasted into the finals of the tournament last year. They were tested by the Juniors in a tightly contested championship game last year. But in the end walked away victorious with the first ever Orange Invitational championship trophy. This year, most of their key contributors are returning to defend their crown. Additionally, there have been rumors that they have made a classified addition to their team who will “serve as a secret weapon.” They are eager to lift the newly sponsored Luke’s Auto Service Championship Trophy at the end of the night.

Contenders: Both Seniors- The senior teams are jam packed with Cedar Grove’s best Varsity athletes. They have an abundance of raw skill and talent. It will be interesting to see if they will be able to defeat the reigning champions. Both teams each have a chance to knock off the favorite if they execute well. One of the major downfalls of the senior teams is the loss of many players due to their involvement in the Sport Management class.

The Dark Horse:Juniors (Joe Tanti)- Nobody should overlook the Junior Team lead by captain Joe Tanti. The captain has been very vocal about his confidence leading up to March 22. Tanti believes he can lead his team to victory against the “overhyped” Faculty team.

Best Match Up: Faculty vs Tanti- This match is the one you do not want to miss. The Tanti vs Mr. Konopka rivalry is intense. The friendly smack talk seems to increase more and more each day.

Players to Watch:  Mr.Konopka (Faculty), Max DeVito (Senior) , Tanti (Juniors)

Karen Raum(Seniors), Michael Fetherman (Faculty), Ms. Angione (Faculty),

Mike Pronesti (Seniors), Mike Lever (Juniors)
