Cedar Grove Police Arrest Montclair Man After Motor Vehicle Chase


CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove police arrested a man on Thursday for possession of a stolen motor vehicle after he attempted to elude police.

Officer Christopher Heck observed a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle at around 2:42 p.m. traveling East on Reservoir Drive with no license plate visible. Officer Heck attempted to stop the drivier, but he went around an East bound vehicle, accelerating rapidly onto Normal Ave. toward Montclair.  

Officer Heck activated his emergency lights and siren to stop the vehicle, but the operator refused to stop and continued toward Montclair State University.  When the driver reached the intersection of Upper Mountain Avenue the signal was red and the driver lost control and dropped the motorcycle in the roadway according to police.

The driver then attempted to flee on foot however Officer Heck apprehended the subject and placed him into custody at the scene with the assistance of Off Duty Port Authority Police Officer Det. David Narvaez.

It was later determined that the Yamaha had been reported stolen by Stafford County Virginia Sheriff's Department in 2015. The driver of the Yamaha, identified as 36-year-old Latwan Munford of Montclair, was charged with possession of the stolen vehicle, obstruction, eluding police, hindering apprehension and multiple motor vehicle offenses. He was transported to the hospital for minor injuries, where he was medically cleared, he was then processed on all charges and transported to Essex County Jail awaiting a bail hearing.

All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
