CEDAR GROVE, NJ - With an ordinance to back them up, Cedar Grove police announced the department is stepping up enforcement of no swimming in Devil's Hole.

A deep ravine in the Peckman River, Devil's Hole is located behind Foodtown and the apartments on Little Falls Road near Community Park.  It has long been a picturesque place to visit, but has also been a gathering place for young people.  Back in August, Cedar Grove Town Council first considered an ordinance to give police more authority stop people from swimming.

"Throughout the years, young people have visited the location," said Township Manager Tom Tucci at the town council meeting in August. "It seems lately, with the advent of social media, it has become an attractive nuisance with large groups of young and sometimes older people going there."

According to Tucci the area is not safe for swimming for a number of reasons. The ravine is deep and a young man drowned there in 2014. The water quality also makes the water unsafe for swimming wth the flow of the Peckman River containing discharge from both the Verona and Cedar Grove sewage treatment plants.

The new ordinance allowed for the posting of signage at multiple entry points stating that swimming, wading, or bathing is prohibited.  Cedar Grove police will make frequent patrols of the area and issue summonses to those who violate the ordinance.
