CEDAR GROVE, NJ — Kerry Peterson took the oath on Thursday and was sworn in as the new mayor of Cedar Grove in a ceremony in front of Township Hall.
Peterson, who had been a member of the township council, succeeds Robbie Vargo as mayor. Vargo announced last month that he was stepping down both as mayor and from the township council for personal reasons.
Peterson had been the deputy mayor of Cedar Grove and has been on the township council since 2017.
"Thirty-four years ago, I stood in the gym across the street and gave a speech at my eighth-grade graduation," Peterson said in a post on her Facebook page Friday. "Yesterday I stood on the lawn of town hall and gave a speech as Mayor of Cedar Grove. I love my town, this community and all we stand for. I am beyond honored to serve.
"Thank you to all that came, and sent messages of support. It is beyond appreciated."
