FAIRFIELD, NJ — Charges for use of a controlled dangerous substance and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence were filed against a Montville man on Wednesday as a result of an investigation of a motor vehicle crash whereby Fairfield police said that the man drove his 2017 BMW into the Little Falls Road side of the Target store, causing a large hole in the cinder block exterior wall and extensive damage to the car.

Fairfield officers were dispatched to the Target store at approximately 3:07 p.m. on a report of a vehicle that struck the building. Upon arrival, officers said the driver was found unconscious behind the wheel of his BMW.

Atlantic Ambulance and the Fairfield Fire Department were also dispatched to assist at the scene, according to police. EMS administered NARCAN, which police said assisted with the man’s recovery. He was then transported to Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains in police custody for further evaluation.

The police investigation, which was conducted by Fairfield Officer Brian Holzmann, revealed that the defendant consumed a quantity of heroin while in or around the Dunkin Donuts located on Passaic Avenue in Fairfield. According to police, he then drove through the rear driveway of the Dunkin Donuts, which is also shared with the Goddard School.

Police said surveillance video shows the BMW stopping for about five minutes in the parking lot of the nursery school just before the vehicle is seen accelerating across Little Falls Road, nearly striking two passing vehicles.

“Thankfully, no one else was injured during this incident, especially children from the nursery school,” said Fairfield Chief of Police Anthony G. Manna. “Our nation’s heroin epidemic continues to jeopardize not only those who have fallen to its addictive spell, but as this case almost showed, the innocent citizen who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The defendant was also charged with driving while under the influence in a school zone as well as careless and reckless driving. He is pending court action in Fairfield Municipal Court.
