NEWARK, NJ - The Cedar Grove Panthers football team defeated Shabazz, 44-38, in Newark on Friday.
A 72-yard pass from Dario Bryant to George Slattery put the Panthers on the board in the first quarter, which was followed quickly by a 2-yard touchdown run from Tyler Rummel to put Cedar Grove up 12-0. Shabazz answered with their own touchdown before the quarter ended to make it a 12-6 game.
The score continued to climb in the second quarter with 2-yard run from Gerard Dente and a 40-yard run from Peter Johnson, giving the Panthers a 24-6 advantage. However, Shabazz was not done and answered with two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion making it 24-20 at the half.
Bryant started the second half off with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Slattery, but Shabazz delivered two back-to-back touchdowns to take a 32-30 lead. Johnson retook the lead for Cedar Grove with an 8-yard run, but the Panthers could not complete the 2-point conversion.
Dente clinched the win for the Panthers with a 53-yard interception return and a successful 2-point conversion pass to Anthony Bilotta made it a 44-32 game. Shabazz delivered one more touchdown, but it was too late to retake the Panthers.
Cedar Grove improves to 6-1 for the season. They host Verona on Friday at 7 p.m.
