VERONA, NJ — The Verona football team scored five touchdowns in the first half and went on to a 49-13 victory over Collegiate of Newark Saturday night.
Cael Zebrowski threw two touchdown passes and Frank Riggio rushed for two TDs for the Hillbillies (2-1), who led, 35-7, at halftime.
Zebrowski threw a 14-yard TD pass to James Haveron and Cole Martin kicked the first of his seven extra points to give Verona a 7-0 lead. Before the first quarter was over, Verona had a 14-0 lead after a Collegiate fumble was recovered in the end zone by Zach Bucher.
Zebrowski, who completed 7 of 10 passes for 107 yards, hit Joey Petro with a 30-yard TD pass for a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Riggio scored both his TDs, on runs of 11 and 2 yards, in the second quarter. Riggio finished with 145 yards on 15 carries.
In the second half, Mike Matarazzo scored on a 6-yard run and Haveron recovered a fumble in the end zone for Verona’s final two TDs of the night.
